Alexander Patrick Benson

Passed away unexpectedly Tuesday 12/12. Alex grew up in Mattawan, MI and is survived by the love of his life Meredith Mitchell, his parents Cheryl Benson, Brian Benson (Nancy Doyle), his siblings Zachary Benson, Sara Benson, Elizabeth Benson, his grandparents Barb Morren, and Bonnie and Rupe Benson, as well as his many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. Alex was preceded in death by Grandpa Wayne, Grandpa Bill, and his Uncle Steven C. Benson. 

Alex graduated from Mattawan High School in 2010. He attended WMU/KVCC for business. Alex had a passion for football that was originally encouraged by his mom to pursue. He was the captain of his football team and his wrestling team senior year. He was the center of his football team which meant he was the rock of his team, just as he was in our lives. Although his 6”4’ 260 pound appearance was intimidating he was known as the gentle giant. He had a loving, infectious, and outgoing personality, he was everyone's best friend. He was our protector. 

Alex and his love Meredith (Merry) enjoyed traveling to various locations. They talked about exploring other countries like Ireland and Germany. Alex and Merry loved their two fur baby kitties Pepper, and Paulie which he spoiled very much. 

Alex was the leader of our family pack. Alex, Merry, his mom Cheryl, Zach, Sara, and Bettie were a package deal. They did many activities together including family vacations, family dinners, game nights, and any and all birthday and holiday celebrations. He was our best friend, our protector, and the light of our lives. Our heart will forever ache for the love of our Alex, our protector forever, the love of our lives forever. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Calvery Community Church; 7829 5^th St. Mattawan, MI 49071.  Visitation will begin at 10:15 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11:00.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mattawan Athletic Department.
