Anna Jane Smith

Anna Jane (Reed) Smith of Schoolcraft, MI passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the age of 94. She was born in White Pigeon, MI on May 19, 1928, the daughter of Roland and Esther (Mecham) Reed.

She grew up and graduated from White Pigeon High School in the late 1940s. In her junior year she met the love of her life: Lewis Smith. The two were united in holy matrimony on June 28, 1947. Together they moved to the Schoolcraft area to start their family. Anna stayed home and raised seven wonderful children, working as a girl scout and cub scout leader. 

Anna loved to garden and work in the yard and was known for her canned pears. Her garden was always massive, she raised enough vegetables to last her family for years, and she always prepared her meals from scratch. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and was a skilled seamstress. 

Anna was preceded in her passing by her husband of forty-nine years: Lewis Smith; son: Alan Smith; her parents; and five siblings.

Left to cherish Anna’s loving memory are her children: Cherie (Larry) Yax, Judy (Jerry) Reitenour, Marsha Nicholas, Douglas (Karen) Smith, Dale (Summer) Smith, and Renee (Kevin) Hale; nineteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren; sibling: Eugene Reed; and many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Anna’s wishes funeral services will be held on Monday, December 5, 2022, at the Schoolcraft First Presbyterian Church, 224 East Cass Street, Schoolcraft, MI 49087, with a time for visiting beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Annamarie Groenenboom officiating. Anna will be laid to rest at Schoolcraft Cemetery following the service. 

Memorials made in Anna’s memory may be directed to Park Village Pines of Kalamazoo. Envelopes will be available at the church.
