Barbara Elaine Sootsman

After a protracted battle with cancer, Barbara Elaine Sootsman died on November 21, 2014 surrounded by her loving family in Vicksburg, MI at the age of 72. She leaves behind her sons, Eugene Sootsman, Clair (Stacey) Sootsman and Tony (Terri) Sootsman . Barb was born on March 23, 1942 in Kalamazoo, MI, to father Nelson "Pat" Sutherland and mother Henrietta (Yonkers) Sutherland, who preceded her in death. Barb was a devoted grandmother who took great pride in being the foundation for her family. She spent her time volunteering at school, reading to children through the Foster Grandparent program and working in the resident store at Heritage Community of Kalamazoo. When diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2010, she remained dedicated to her family and in her will to fight her illness. Her strength was tested again when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2012. She remained a brave, iron-willed woman, even throughout her final months. Barb is survived by her children, as well as her sisters, Betty Lennen and Patricia Ketchum; her granddaughters, Samantha (Brian) Heckman, Kali Sootsman, Kelly Sootsman and Marissa Sootsman; and her beloved great-grandchildren Brayden and Emmaleigh Heckman. Barb requested to be cremated. Her ashes will be interred at the family plot in a private ceremony at Schoolcraft Township Cemetery on December 1st, 2014. A reception at Tony and Terri's home will follow; all are welcome. The family would especially like to thank Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, for their excellent work and loving care; and the staff of the West Michigan Cancer Center for their constant, attentive treatment. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
