Betty Elaine Shearer, a beloved resident of Vicksburg, MI, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born on May 21, 1931, in Alamo, MI, to Oscar and Opal (Hamlin) Allison.
Betty's journey in life was marked by numerous achievements and cherished moments. She graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1949 and embarked on an exciting adventure when she married Edwin Shearer on January 6, 1951.
Devoted to her community, Betty served as a Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in the Vicksburg Chapter. She was a member of both the Schoolcraft Fraternal Order of the Eagles Post 3531 and the American Legion Post 475.
Betty had a zest for life and a passion for various interests. She had a love for gambling, enjoyed spending quality time at the family cottage on Portage Lake, and was a dedicated Detroit Tigers fan. Traveling was one of her greatest joys, and she worked at the Greater Kalamazoo Car Auction for 25 years. Betty also had a competitive side, relishing in the sport of bowling, and she cherished the excitement of dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Her positive outlook on life was contagious, and she found beauty and happiness in everyday moments.
Betty was preceded in passing by her parents, her beloved husband Edwin Shearer in 1989, her grandson Travis Wright in 2001, her daughter Rhonda Wright on July 2, 2021, and her three siblings.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories for her surviving family, including her children: Allen (Emily) Shearer and Linda (Mike) Fisher; son-in-law: Perry Wright. Betty's memory will forever live on through her cherished grandchildren: Michelle DeMattei, Andrea (Doug) Prudden, Cole (Stephanie) Fisher, and Paul (Kortni) Fisher. She was also a proud great-grandmother to eight adoring great-grandchildren.
Betty Elaine Shearer's presence in the lives of those who knew her will always be remembered with love and gratitude. Her vibrant spirit, warm smile, and zest for life have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Betty's legacy lives on through the memories we hold dear, and she will forever be in our hearts. May she rest in eternal peace.
In accordance with the family’s wishes public will be held at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, 409 South Main Street, Vicksburg, MI 49097, on Friday, September 15, 2023, with a time for visiting beginning at 12:00 noon until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. with Ron Herron officiating. Betty will be laid to rest with her late husband at Vicksburg Cemetery following the service.
Memorials made in Betty’s name may be directed to the Branch County Humane Society or the White Pigeon Fire Department. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
