Carl W. Wespinter III, 89, of Portage MI, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025. Born on August 17, 1935, in Hastings MI, Carl's life was one of dedication, creativity, and service. His commitment to family, deep care for his community, and infectious sense of humor touched everyone who knew him.
Carl was born and raised in the small town of Hastings, MI, by his devoted parents, Thelma and Milburn. During high school, he joined the Naval Reserves, demonstrating an early commitment to service. He later attended Wooster College before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War. After serving his country with honor, he continued his military involvement for several years in the Naval Reserves. Following his time in the service, Carl embarked on a career with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), where he worked as a construction inspector and heavy equipment operator.
In 1966, Carl married Joann, and together they combined their family of three children, creating a close-knit and loving blended family. Their home was filled with adventure, creativity, and teamwork. At a young age, Carl and Joann built a stunning modern home in Portage, MI, almost entirely on their own-a testament to their determination and shared vision. Together, they also built a successful Amway business to support their family.
Carl was a man of many talents and passions. He loved building things from recycled materials, camping, bike riding, exploring the United States, scrapbooking, and volunteering his time. As a father, he was hands-on, teaching his children how to create, explore, and live a life of service. As a husband, he was ahead of his time, fully sharing all aspects of family life with Joann. They worked as a team in both life and business, setting an example of partnership and dedication.
Carl was also a cherished friend to many, always finding joy in the company of others. In his later years, he especially treasured the time spent with his fellow veterans, sharing stories and camaraderie that remained close to his heart.
Carl was a man of deep faith and service. He was a founding member of Twelve Baskets, a food pantry that feeds hundreds of families each week. He served as both a board member and a dedicated volunteer for eleven years. Prior to his involvement with Twelve Baskets, he worked with Appalachian Reachout of Grand Rapids, delivering clothing and housewares to some of the poorest counties in Appalachia.
A longtime member of Lake Center Bible Church, Carl was deeply involved in the church community. He led Adult Sunday School classes for many years, participated in Men of Belief, and served on pastoral search committees. His commitment to service extended beyond the church, as he actively contributed to the Lake Center Business Association, working to improve roadways. Additionally, he played a role in shaping the future of Portage as a member of the 2025 Commission, focusing on city planning and, in particular, the expansion of the bike trail system.
Carl was known for his keen sense of humor, telling jokes to anyone and everyone who would listen. He never met a stranger-everyone he encountered quickly became a friend. His signature style was bright tie-dye clothing, worn every single day, amassing a collection that rivaled none. He also spent much of his time with his Amish friends, traveling the country and embarking on new adventures. At Twelve Baskets, he was known as the Cookie Man, doling out sweet treats and jokes to all the patrons.
Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joann, his children Michael (Diane), Pamela, Mic (Jodi), and his sister Barbara. With five generations of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, there are too many to mention. But he was beloved by all of them, forming close bonds and loving relationships who will all miss their funny and creative grandpa.
There are no plans for a memorial service at this time, his family requests that you remember a funny story about Carl and praise God for a life well lived.
