Charles Downey Jr.

Charles Downey Jr. of Lawton, MI passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021, at the age of 73. He was born on April 12, 1948, in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Charles Downey Sr. and Leona Gillespie.

He graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1966. Charles opened and ran Downey’s Cafe at 226 Parsons for several years. Chuck was an avid guitar player, singer, and songwriter. He loved country music and played mostly by ear.

Chuck is preceded in his passing by his parents; sister: Deborah Schultz; and his beloved wife: Vickie Downey whom he affectionately referred to as “Ms. Vicko”.

Left to cherish Chuck’s loving memory are his children: Donovan Downey and Mariah Downey; siblings: Dorris Milan, Dale Downey, Cindy Glenn, and Michael Gillespie; and grandchildren: Braxton, Raelynn, Charles Jr., and Lydia-Marie.

In accordance with Chuck’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021, beginning at 11:00 am at Fletcher’s Pub, 6946 West Q Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
