CLARA MAY SRACKANGAST

Clara passed away on May 29, 2011 at the Laurels of Galesburg with her family by her side after fighting a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born on May 23, 1933 in River Rouge, Michigan to Anna (Richter) and Martin D. Smith. She moved to Galesburg in 1946 to live with Uncle Albert and Aunt Ruth Smith. Clara is a graduate of Galesburg Agricultural School and Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Clara retired from the Upjohn Company. Until recently, she was the secretary at the Galesburg United Methodist Church. She was active in the Galesburg Downtown Development Authority, a mentor in the Kids Hope Program, and was a volunteer with the Loaves and Fishes. She enjoyed volunteering and helping others. She recently won a community service award.
She leaves a son, Joseph (Alice) Srackangast of Galesburg, MI, a daughter, Susan K. Srackangast, of Kalamazoo, MI, 4 grandchildren, Aaron (Meagan) Srackangast, Colene Srackangast, Andrew Srackangast all of Galesburg, MI and Zoe Srackangast of Kalamazoo, MI, 1 great grandchild, Bryce Srackangast of Galesburg, MI, 2 sisters, Lillian (Fred) DiFrancesco of Otsego, MI, Fern Berner of Kalamazoo, MI, sister-in-law, Eleanor Smith of Lansing, many nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, her Aunt Ruth and Uncle Albert, one brother, Robert Smith and one brother-in-law, Louis Berner. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Laurels for their excellent care. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Galesburg United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society. Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 12th at 3:00 PM at the Galesburg United Methodist Church.
