David Forby Shinn died after a long illness at Upjohn Care and Rehabilitation Center in Kalamazoo, MI on July 23, 2016. He was the youngest of three children born to Howard and Julia (Curtis) Shinn, in Kalamazoo on May 1, 1944. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and obtained his Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University. He also completed many requirements toward a Masters degree at the University of Michigan. A veteran of the US Army, David served in Vietnam in 1967-68. He married Linda Schermerhorn and they resided in Garden City MI for many years; David's working life consisted of careers with the State of Michigan, as a social worker working primarily with adults, and with the Ford Motor Company, working at various locations in the Detroit area. He retired in 2000. David was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Curtis Shinn. Survivors, in addition to his former wife, Linda Shinn, include a sister, Susan (Phil) Bosma and three nephews, Alan (Jennifer) Bosma, Kevin (Kimberly) Bosma and Jason (Cynthia) Shinn, four great nieces and a great nephew. Throughout his life David was a friend to many, and was always willing to help those in need. He enjoyed his work, traveling, gardening, and in retirement, he particularly enjoyed reading. David will be remembered by those left behind as a firm believer in our Lord, Jesus Christ, and as a strong, devoted, optimistic friend.
