Delbert John Bassett, 90, passed away on October 17, 2023, at Kauhale in Otsego, Michigan. Del was an Army veteran who served from the early 1950s to 1958. Upon honorable release from active duty, he was a specialist, second class. He worked in tank recovery during his time serving in the Army.
Delbert was born in Kalamazoo Michigan and was the son of John W. Bassett and Lillian Scott. Del was raised by his grandparents Roswell and Vineta Scott.
Del was preceded in death by his wife - Rena Bassett, Son - Benjamin Bassett, granddaughter-in-law- Connie Bassett, and Daughter-in-law - Joy Bassett.
He is survived by his children John Delbert Bassett - Son (Nancy), Douglas Gene Bassett - Son, and Kim Bassett - daughter-in-law. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Peter C. Bassett, Tiffany Chichester (Scott), Sara Sparrow (Myron), Peter M. Bassett, Curtiss Bassett, Jeremy Bassett, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Del was an avid river fishing enthusiast; He enjoyed riding his bike and playing his fiddle. For many years he was a local violin instructor. In 2000 he was inducted into the Michigan Fiddlers Hall of Fame and in his spare time he enjoyed restoring antique violins. He loved the Lord and was an active member of the church providing lots of support. He loved and adored his wife, Rena; they had been married for 59 years. Del had a big heart always helping those in need. He donated his time, money, and talent to help others.
Delbert's education included many technical training courses. He graduated from AT&T night school and received an engineering degree. Over his life, he had a variety of roles ranging from a milk delivery driver to an engineer.
Along with working for others, he had an entrepreneurial spirit. Over the course of his life, he owned and operated the Fiddlers Den, Bassett Exterminators, and Mobile Welding, and was a farmer of many types of crops and livestock.
Visit with family and friends on Sunday, November 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Gobles Seventh-day Adventist Church; 32146 6th Ave, Gobles, MI 49055. A Memorial service will follow at 11:00 at the same location.
