Donald E. Johnson

September 16, 1927 — October 15, 2024

Vicksburg, MI

Don went home to be with his Lord for eternity in Heaven at the age of 97 on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, with his loving wife, Jean, and family by his side.

Don was born in Coloma, Michigan on September 16, 1927. The son of Emil and Demarius (Healy) Johnson. He graduated from Coloma High School in 1945 where he enjoyed participation in sports especially baseball. Shortly after, he was drafted into the U.S. Army serving two years.

In May 1950, he married Jean A. Bennett (who survives). A daughter, Karen (Kloss) and son, Keith followed to complete their family. They celebrated 74 years together on May 27, 2024.

Don was employed by The Upjohn Company (now known as Pfizer) for 34 years, retiring in 1984.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Karen and son Keith and his brothers Elwood and Walter Johnson. He is survived by his sister Sandra (Gordon) VanDresek and brother Marten Johnson; daughter-in-law Diane Johnson; grandchildren Rebecca (Markus) Huntley, Jennifer (Jason) Cook, and Joseph Johnson; great-grandchildren Savannah Huntley, Jordyn Cook, Elijah Huntley, and Lucas Cook; and several nieces and nephews.

Don will be remembered for his ease around people and a loving, positive, cheerful, and joyful attitude. His early interests included coin collecting (numismatics) and the study of investing. After retirement, he and Jean enjoyed many years traveling by motor home, spending 6 months in the south and west of United States and 6 months in Michigan. In later life, one of his interests was Bible study which he felt would help him be a better servant of his Lord. He also found joy in helping family and giving to organizations in need.

Don was a member of Lakeland Reformed Church, Kalamazoo Numismatic Club, Sonora Masonic Lodge in Summerdale, Alabama, and a past member of the Vicksburg Lions Club, and Gideons International.

Cremation has taken place. Burial and military honors will commence at Fort Custer, Battle Creek at a later date.
