Doreen Mary Ellwood

Doreen Mary Webb Ellwood Doreen passed in the early hours of Saturday, October 29. She was born to Thomas and Florence Webb in Oxford, England on June 25, 1932. She met her future husband there in 1950 while he was serving the U.S. Air Force. After courtship of two years, he returned to the U.S. and Doreen immigrated to join him on the Queen Elizabeth. They were married in Otsego, Michigan on June 17. After 10 years of married life and travel, Doreen and Bill settled in Oakwood, where they were blessed with two children who became the loves of their lives. During this time, Doreen became an American citizen, a role she took seriously. They enjoyed many children centered activities such as scouting and Oakwood PTA. They were also able to return to England for a visit as a family, an important goal for both of them. Doreen's other careers included Fabrikal Corporation in earlier years, as well as 20 years at Oakwood Elementary with KPS Food Service. She retired in 1994. Doreen was known for her hospitality and she particularly enjoyed her role as hostess for Christmas Punchbowl parties with the neighbors. Fond memories also include many neighborhood cookouts and bonfires. She also enjoyed her hobbies such as knitting, baking and a good cup of tea. Doreen was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1994. Surviving are daughter, Liane and son, Will. She also leaves two beloved grandsons, Sean and Ian Quinn. In addition, her brother, Bill Webb and his wife, Irmgard remain in England with their family. Doreen would like to thank so many people. Amongst them are Pat for her devoted friendship and Dr. Keith Bailey for his care and humor. So many cannot be listed but are greatly appreciated for their friendship during this life. According to Doreen's wishes, cremation has taken place. Her wish was to "go home quietly with the angels", foregoing formal services but there will be a reception and memorial at Oakwood Neighborhood Center, 3320 Laird Ave. in Kalamazoo (behind the former elementary school). A reception from 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Thursday, November 3rd will include a memorial at 3:00. If desired, donations may be sent to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Oakwood Neighborhood Association or charity of one's choice. Friends may share a memory online at: www.avinkcremation.com.
