Dorothy Buckmaster

February 4, 1956 — January 19, 2025

Kalamazoo, MI

Dorothy Buckmaster, a beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted educator, passed away peacefully on January19, 2025, at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo, MI, where she spent her last moments surrounded by serenity.

Born on February 4, 1956, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Dorothy was a proud graduate of Vicksburg High School, Class of 1974. Her compassionate spirit led her to a remarkable 21-year career at Comstock Public Schools, where she dedicated herself to working with special needs children. In doing so, she profoundly changed the lives of countless students and their families, embodying the essence of love and service.

Dorothy was the epitome of kindness, known for her gentle nature and infectious smile that could melt even the coldest of hearts. She viewed herself as an instrument of Christ, living each day as a faithful servant of Jesus. Her loved ones often remarked that she truly was the hands and feet of Jesus, making everyone around her feel treasured and cherished.

Family was of utmost importance to Dorothy. She took great pride in her role as a mother and grandmother, considering this to be her proudest accomplishment. She held her daughter, Mellisa Buckmaster, and granddaughter, Cadence Buckmaster, close to her heart, showering them with unconditional love. Her husband, Mark Buckmaster, was her partner in life even though they had divorced, they still remained on good terms, and she was surrounded by the warmth and support of her siblings: Charlie Shearer, Kathy Shearer, Denise Shearer, Mary Nguyen (Nghiem), and sister-in-law, Carol Shearer.

While Dorothy's earthly journey has ended, her legacy of compassion and love will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her. She had a deep passion for planting flowers and immersing herself in the beauty of nature, where she found peace. Additionally, Dorothy loved attending Radiant Church in Richland, MI, and spent countless hours reading her Bible, drawing strength from her faith.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Lynn and Doris Shearer, as well as her brothers and sisters: Butch, Paul, Ray, Andy, Joe and Margie. Their memories live on through the loving family she nurtured and inspired throughout her life.

In celebrating Dorothy's life, we remember her not just for her accomplishments but for the incredible warmth she brought into every room, the love she gave freely, and the way she made everyone feel valued. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.
