Elisabeth Benbelkacem

Elisabeth “Liza” Benbelkacem, beloved mother of Sunshine and wife to Kimon, passed away on March 27, 2023 surrounded by family and friends after a 15 year journey with Alzheimers. Liza was born on March 12, 1951 to Salem and Rachel (Souillard) Benbelkacem.

Liza was born and grew up in Louvroil, France. She was the last of eleven children. At the age of 17, she moved to London to continue her schooling and work as a nanny. Later, she moved to the United States. There she met and married her lifelong companion Kimon Ganiatsos. The family moved to Chicago, IL and later purchased property in Fennville, MI. She loved the Fennville area and would spend time farming, working at a lakeshore farmstand, thrifting, and antiquing. She loved the outdoors, walking and hiking. She was an accomplished cook and loved the foodie culture of Southwest Michigan. She always prepared her food farm to table and had many local sources. Liza loved animals of all kinds and they loved her. She was very creative as a cross-stitcher. She was a bookworm and loved a large range of music from opera to classic rock to local bands.

Liza is survived by her husband of 35 years, Kimon Ganiatsos; her daughter Sunshine Céline Benbelkacem (partner Michael Louizos); her siblings: Pierre, Thérèse, Micheline, Yasmina, Marie, and Larbi; grandchildren: Marlee Boba, Olive, Murphy and Cleo Icimsoy as well as many nieces and nephews. Liza is also survived by others that were as close as her own children: Sonia Duncan-Boba, Bianca Bartel, Sandra Castro-Carrera, Angel Levine and Jennifer Burris.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Hdjila, Michel, Lydie, Sahadha, Margie, as well as one of her adopted children, Eddie Castro.

Following her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration is being planned. Please check back for more information.

Liza est née et a grandi à Louvroil, en France. Elle était la dernière de onze enfants. A 17 ans, elle a déménagé à Londres pour poursuivre ses études et travailler comme nourrice. Plus tard, elle a déménagé aux États-Unis. Là, elle a rencontré et épousé son compagnon Kimon Ganiatsos. La famille a déménagé à Chicago, IL et plus tard acheté une propriété à Fennville, MI. Elle adorait la région de Fennville et y passait temps à l'agriculture, au travail dans une ferme au bord d'un lac, à l'épargne et aux antiquités. Elle aimait le plein air, marche et randonnée. Elle était un chef accomplie et adorait la culture gastronomique du sud-ouest du Michigan. Elle préparait toujours sa table avec des nombreuses sources locales. Liza aimait les animaux de toutes sortes et ils l'aimaient de retour. Elle était très douée a la broderie. Elle était un rat de bibliothèque et aimait un grand gamme de musique allant de l'opéra au rock classique en passant par des groupes locaux.

Liza laisse dans le deuil son mari depuis 35 ans, Kimon Ganiatsos; sa fille Sunshine Céline Benbelkacem (partenaire Michael Louizos) ; ses frères et sœurs : Pierre, Thérèse, Micheline, Yasmina, Marie, et Larbi; petits-enfants : Marlee Boba, Olive, Murphy et Cleo Icimsoy ainsi que plusieurs nièces et neveux. Liza laisse également dans le deuil d'autres personnes aussi proches que ses propres enfants : Sonia Duncan-Boba, Bianca Bartel, Sandra Castro-Carrera, Angel Levine et Jennifer Burris.

Elle a été précédée dans la mort par ses parents et ses frères et sœurs, Hdjila, Michel, Lydie, Sahadha, Margie, ainsi qu'un de ses enfants adoptifs, Eddie Castro.

Conformément à ses souhaits, la crémation a eu lieu. Une célébration commémorative est prévue.
