Passed away at White Oaks Hawthorn House in Lawton on Jan. 15, 2011. Gene was born Oct. 10, 1930 in Tyner, IN to Ernest L. and Mildred K. (Smith) Welsh. He was graduated from Lawton High School in 1948. Gene served in the US Navy from 1949 to 1953, obtaining the rate of QM2 and spent his tour of duty aboard the submarine Tender USS Sperry in San Diego, CA. During the late 1950's and 1960's Gene was one of the better fast pitch softball pitchers and several summers pitched over 100 games. Gene was employed by several large construction contractors from 1969 to 1990 and had assignments in a dozen cities in the US and four foreign countries. Survived by brothers; Jack and Terry of Gobles and special friend Jennifer Asewizc of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. At his request cremation has taken place and his remains will be scattered at Riggins, Idaho River of no return. Also at his request there will be no visitation or memorial service.
