Helen Lovin

Helen M. Lovin (Hoyt, Phelps), beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024. She was born on June 19, 1930, in Kalamazoo, MI, the cherished daughter of Hale and Marie (Fox) Hoyt. She was raised on the family farm near Schoolcraft and graduated from Mattawan High School.

Helen led a life filled with dedication and service to her community. She retired from Upjohn Co. in 1991, after which she devoted her time to volunteering for several years at various organizations, including the Red Cross, Portage Outreach (now PCC), Kalamazoo Air Zoo, Portage Zhang Senior Center, St. Michael's Church, and many other places. Her generosity and kindness touched many lives. She enjoyed genealogy, crocheting potholders to give to friends and family and cuddling with her cat Dusty.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, Hale B. Hoyt; her mother, Marie Fox Hoyt; her sister, Kathryn Hoyt Smith; her niece, Barbara M. Smith Bostic; her husband, John Lovin; and her daughter-in-law, Cindy Lake.

She is survived by her loving family: her daughter, Nancy Fish-Stone (Bill); her sons, Daniel I. Phelps (Patricia) and Bruno (Timothy) A. Phelps; her five grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. Helen's legacy of love and compassion will continue to live on through her family and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Helen's wish was to be cremated and there will be a private committal service to lay Helen to rest at Schoolcraft Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Helen's memory be directed to Portage Zhang Senior Center or a charity of your choice.

Helen's warm heart, tireless spirit, and dedication to her family and community will be deeply missed. Her memory will forever be a source of inspiration and love.
