Ivan L. Winkler, a dedicated family man, hardworking individual, and a self-made man, has sadly passed away at the age of 91 on October 15, 2023, in Vicksburg. He was born on January 12, 1932, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and grew up to become an outstanding individual who touched the lives of countless people.
Ivan's career spanned over 46 years in the paper mill trade for International Paper. He started working there prior to his military service but was fortunate enough to have his employer save him a spot to come back to upon his return. His commitment and dedication were exemplary throughout his professional life.
Outside of work, Ivan had a passion for cooking on the grill. He mastered the art of grilling and became known as the grill master among his loved ones. His delicious meals became cherished memories for those lucky enough to experience them.
Although Ivan had only received an eighth-grade education, he was one of the most intelligent individuals you could ever know. He possessed an uncanny ability to excel in various trades and had an abundance of knowledge that impressed all who interacted with him.
One of Ivan's proudest accomplishments was marrying the love of his life, Doris. Their love story began when they lived just one block away from each other during their childhoods. However, it wasn't until her junior year of high school that Ivan asked her if she needed a ride home from school and their paths truly intertwined. When it came time for their first date, Ivan thought it would be wise to impress Doris' father by taking her to church. Their union strengthened over time and they eventually married on March 24, 1951, which happened to be Doris' 18th birthday.
Together they had five children Larry, Gary, Frank, Marsue, and Brian. Their legacy continues through his 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild with another on the way.
Ivan's vibrant personality was characterized by his great sense of humor and determination. He approached life with a strong work ethic and tackled any challenge that came his way. He had a knack for being a jack of all trades, which earned him the respect and admiration of those around him.
Throughout his life, Ivan found solace in various hobbies and interests. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering with motors, all sports, and spending time outdoors. These activities allowed him to appreciate the beauty of nature while indulging in activities that brought him joy.
As a proud United States Air Force veteran, Ivan served his country until February 3, 1956, earning the rank of SSGT during his time in the military. His dedication to the nation was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal.
Ivan L. Winkler will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, hard work ethic, and jovial personality. He leaves behind an incredible legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
