Jacoba Dortwegt, 94, of Allegan MI. died on August 14th, 2021. “Coby” Dortwegt, daughter of Hendrik and Diewertje "Mantje" Planque, loving wife of Anton Dortwegt, passed away on August 14th in hospice care in Allegan, MI after months of declining health. She is survived by her two sons, Robert and James, as well as three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She worked as a secretary and administrative assistant at various times, but focused mainly on her family. She was a very social person and loved time with her family and many friends, who will miss her very much. A service will be held in her memory at the Allegan United Methodist Church on Wednesday, 8/25/21, at 2:00 PM.
Coby was born in Delft, Netherlands in 1926 into a traditional working class family. She grew up in a very socially progressive neighborhood. This greatly influenced her values and caring for others. She attended with her mother a small congregation of “vrijzinnig”, or free thinking, Protestants known for their belief that each Christian professes their opinions and faith in their own, non-dogmatic way.
Coby’s youth was impacted by the Great Depression, WWII and occupation. During the joyous celebrations after the war, Coby met Tony at a street dance. Tony had a visa for the USA and immigrated returning to marry Coby in 1949. Coby then immigrated to the US, as well, settling in Chicago where they had two sons, Jim and Bob.
In 1972, Coby and Tony moved to Allegan where Coby began working at the night school making many friends at work and in the community. After retirement, Coby was active in several groups including Lifelong Learning and Great Decisions. In her later years, she remained in touch with friends locally and afar by phone, which became her “lifeline”.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family asks that you make donations to the Wings of Hope Hospice. Wings helped the family navigate our Mother’s final weeks, and is deserving of support.
