James Clarence Ullrey, a resident of Kalamazoo, embraced life with an unwavering spirit until he peacefully passed away on April 4, 2023, at the age of 80. Born on April 12, 1942, to Billy and Nina (Brown) Ullrey, James lived a life defined by his remarkable ingenuity and generous nature.
James had an exceptional ability to see potential where others saw challenges. A true mechanical genius, he could mend and improve anything with a motor. He shared this passion with his children, instilling in them the knowledge of cars, engines, and all things that move. From teaching them how to drive to indulging their need for speed, James created countless cherished memories with his beloved family.
His boundless creativity extended beyond mechanics, as he was renowned for his ability to craft and repair virtually anything. His involvement in his children's activities, from coaching sports teams to supporting their interests, demonstrated his dedication to family. The garage and his workshop were more than spaces; they were his sanctuaries where he created, fixed, and explored new ideas.
James's kindness knew no bounds, readily assisting anyone in need, and his expertise was sought after by many for his meticulous planning and practical wisdom. An active member of First Reformed Church, he radiated warmth and was cherished by his church community.
Marilyn Jean Ullrey, also a resident of Kalamazoo, graced this world with her presence until she peacefully passed away on December 28, 2022, at the age of 83. Born on May 5, 1939, to Guy and Anna VanHaaften, Marilyn's life was marked by her love for family and the joys she found in life's simple pleasures.
Marilyn's dedication to her family was profound. She was a loving mother to her three children, Steven (Colleen) Ullrey, Kevin Scott Ullrey, and Julie (Micah) VanBeck. Her three granddaughters, Haley, Kylee, and Madison VanBeck, brought her immense joy. James is also survived by two children: Jeff (Becky) Ullrey and Jamie (Gary) Gillette, and four grandchildren.
An accomplished quilter, Marilyn's skilled hands wove warmth and comfort into every stitch. Her quilts were not just works of art but tokens of her love, crafted for her family and for those in need. Her affinity for sewing and reading allowed her to find solace in creativity and imagination.
James and Marilyn shared a love that was felt by everyone fortunate enough to know them and the two of them were united in holy matrimony on August 23, 1969. Their dedication to family was unwavering, prioritizing quality time over all else. The couple found solace in camping and embarked on an adventurous retirement, traversing the US in a motorhome for 16 years. Eventually, they discovered their haven in Fort Myers, Florida, building strong bonds with friends and their church community.
Their legacy as Nana and Papa to their grandchildren was cherished and invaluable. Their home was a haven of both affection and structure, where rules were complemented by boundless love. The impact of James and Marilyn's presence was felt not only within their family but also within their church family, where their warm spirits left an indelible mark.
Though they are no longer with us, James and Marilyn Ullrey's memory will forever be treasured by the countless lives they touched. Their love story and legacy of selflessness and devotion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know them.
A celebration of their lives will be held at First Reformed Church, 7905 S Westnedge Ave, Portage, MI 49002, where they found community and solace, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, with a time for visiting beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in their honor to The Centrica Care Navigators.
"Though they may be gone, their love and influence live on in the hearts of all who were touched by their presence."
