John Roy Bevins III

John Bevins, formerly of Plainwell, passed away suddenly in Tallahassee, FL on Sept. 30. Visit with his family and friends on Sunday, October 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the McCowen & Secord Funeral Home Marshall & Gren Chapel; 120 S. Woodhams St. Plainwell, MI 49080. A graveside committal will be held on Monday October 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Gun Plain Township. John was born in 1942 in Paintsville, KY to John and Louise Bevins. He graduated from Paintsville High School in 1960. He served in the US Army from 1961-1967. His Army career started as a Hawk Missile Mechanic but he spent the latter portion of his service as a member of the Army Rifle Team. After leaving the Service he moved to Michigan and started a career as a truck and heavy vehicle engineer. His career took him to various places around the country and into projects from coal mining equipment in West Virginia to armored trucks in Memphis, TN to aircraft support equipment in Florida. Later he settled into working for the State of Florida where he was responsible for determining specifications and requirements for all vehicles and equipment purchased by the State as well as managing the auctions where vehicles were ultimately disposed of. His lifelong hobbies were working on his vehicles, boating, and fishing. Just days before his abrupt illness he was out in his driveway, working on the transmission of his 1993 GMC pickup. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Louise Bevins of Plainwell Michigan. He is survived by two sons Michael (Patricia) Bevins of Defiance, MO, Evan (Elisha) Bevins of Ohio, 2 grandsons, Kyle and Andrew Bevins, 3 granddaughters, Kristin (Conner) Rethwill, Violet and Charlotte Bevins, 1 great granddaughter, Azura Bevins, brothers James (Sharon) and Larry (Lorie) Bevins, and many nieces and nephews.
