Joseph R. Silver

Joseph R. Silver - 91, passed away Friday April 27, 2012, at Golden Orchards Assisted Living facility in Fennville, Michigan, surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Florence, of 69 years (as of April 24th). Joe was very proud to have remained faithfully married to his "blind date" of 71 years ago. He is also survived by his seven children: Mike, Sue, Pam, Steve, Aaron, Dan, Lisa, and his dog Buddy. Also surviving his loss are his brother Harold - 95, his Sister Lillian - 87, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. Joe was born in Chicago and his family relocated to South Haven and then Allegan during the Great Depression. Allegan has remained his home ever since. When asked what made him most proud, he answered, "raising my kids"; when asked what was most important to him, he answered, "my integrity"; when asked what he most appreciated in life, he answered, "all of the friends that I have made"; when asked why he remained in Allegan after his brothers and sisters moved away, he answered, "Allegan is a great place to raise a family." " His passion was golfing with his buddies. He was not known for hitting particularly long drives, but he knew how to hit straight to keep the ball in play; he even shot a hole-in-one on two occasions! This is the way he also lived his life -- as a "straight shooter." Building a reputation as a respected and trusted businessman and car salesman was vital to his long successful career, so much so that many customers turned into dear lifelong friends. Dad also known as "Honest Joe" sold cars for over 50 years. His slogan was "For a Sterling Deal On an Automobile" see Joe Silver. He chose to live life with a positive outlook, despite its many headwinds, and he possessed a wonderful sense of humor that he maintained until the very end. Joe expressed his desire to be cremated and for there to be no formal funeral service. In his words..."I don't want anybody to fuss over me." Consequently, the family will honor his request and not hold a public viewing and/or funeral service. The Silvers wish to thank all of those who have kept Joe in their thoughts and prayers these past few days and for having attended the many birthday and wedding celebrations his family has held. There will be a "Celebration of Joe's Life" on Friday, June 1st at Allegan Township Hall at 3037 118th Avenue. It will be from 5:30 to 8:30pm. This is for relatives, friends and the community to come celebrate love and friendship and memories. Not necessary, but if you would like, bring your favorite dish to pass. Should you wish to offer donations in his honor, please consider Golden Orchards, located at 2464 55th Street, Fennville, MI 49408, which became his home for the past 12 months. Likewise, please consider donating to Heartland Hospice Services of Grand Rapids, located at 3230 Eagle Park Drive NE, Suite 200, Grand Rapids, MI 49525. They provided Joe and his family with excellent care and attention during his final days.
