Joyce E Erwin

Joyce Elaine Beatty Hoogendoorn Erwin was born in Kalamazoo on February 4,1930 to Buhl Beatty and Grace (Gorham) Beatty, the eldest of three children. She passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025 in Kalamazoo at the age of 95. Joyce graduated from Kalamazoo Central HIgh School in January of 1948 and was married to Duane Hoogendoorn in May of the same year. Duane and Joyce had three children - John Hoogendoorn, Marcia Hoogendoorn Kendall, and Sally Hoogendoorn Wallace. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Francis Beatty, her daughter, Sally Wallace, her sister, Gloria Beatty Owen Garnaat, a nephew, Michael Owen, a grandson, Duane Hoogendoorn II, husbands Duane Hoogendoorn and Jimmie Erwin, and a very special friend, Charles Kendall.

Surviving to mourn her absence are her son, John (Cassie) Hoogendoorn, daughter Marcia Kendall, 15 grandchildren - Aaron (Amber) Wallace, Thomas (Linnae) Kendall, Jason (Jillane) Wallace, Anthony (Sherry Martin) Kendall, Cerissa (Ryan) Sample, Summer (Kevin) Dean, Cara (Travis Bursik) Kendall, Nicholas (Darcy Hess) Wallace, Marie (Josh) Troyer, John (Kait Spychala) Hoogendoorn, Jr., Melody Hoogendoorn, Abraham (Chelsea) Hoogendoorn, Daniel (Gina) Hoogendoorn, Paige (Will) Glenn, Angel (Kaleb Brown) Hoogendoorn, and 38 great-grandchildren. In 95 years of living, one develops special friendships along the way and Joyce is also missed by Reed Kendall, Karla Goodman and Anne Geist.

Joyce enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, traveling, home projects and decorating, and visiting with family. Although she is now at peace, she will be greatly missed. 

A private celebration of life will be scheduled in the spring.
