Passed away Jan. 8, 2010 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Karen was born July 8, 1948 in Japan the daughter of Elmer and Esther (Morrison) Duff. At her request cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or services at this time.
Karen was an avid writer and began her story telling as early as 4 years of age. Karen was my sister and we shared a bedroom as kids. After we were put to bed, all our stuffed animals came to life as The Little Ones. I was Aunt Suzy and Karen was Aunt Karrot and chief story teller and editor. We ventured, thanks to Karen's reading, to Alaska to gold mine, Africa to diamond mine and went rafting down the Amazon.
In second or third grade Karen was accused of plagiarism for a poem about a little wren because the teacher said it was too good to have been written by some one so young. If you knew her as Karen, Mog or Camilla, you know she was that good, and probably all ready smarter than her teacher.
Karen graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1966. She attended Kellogg Community College, Wayne State University, University of Connecticut, San Jose State University and received her Masters Degree in poetry from San Francisco State sometime in the 1970's.
Under the name Camilla M Decarnin, Karen (also known as Mog) wrote poety, articles, literary criticism and fiction. Her work appeared in many journals and anthologies, including "The Advocate", "Tales of the Unanticipated" and "Time Frames". She was the editor of "Worlds Apart, an Anthology of Lesbian and Gay Science Fiction" in 1986.
Karen was the American consultant and special editor for "American Pictures" and in 1986 won first place in the Writers of the Future awards.
Mog was well known and loved in GLBT, Fanfiction and Science Fiction circles.
Karen will be missed by her sister Suzzanne and her brother Michael and her many friends world wide.
