Kenneth Heikes, of Vicksburg passed away on Thursday, June 25. 2020 at the age of 80. Ken was born December 2, 1939 in Vicksburg. He was the son of Glenn and Ruth (Barendreght) Heikes. He went through Vicksburg Schools and graduated with the Class of 1958. After high school he received his Associates Degree from Michigan State University. Ken served his country in the United States Air Force. On June 17, 1961 Ken married Sue Lux and together they spent over 50 years together prior to Sue passing in 2015. Ken worked for Sherman Services since 1967, before buying the business in 1981, then continuing as the business owner until 2001. Since 1974, Ken was active in the Boy Scouts and was a Scout master for over 25 years.
Ken was always taking in strays whether it was a two legged or four legged and had a very giving heart. He enjoyed his trips up north to camp and fish so much that he always kept a suitcase ready for his next adventure. Kenneth Heikes will be remembered by his family for being helpful, generous, social and family oriented. He was very proud of each of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ken’s family includes his three children: Leroy (Lisa) Heikes, of Plainwell; Burt Heikes, of Vicksburg; Michelle (Jason) Hall, of Paw Paw; 13 grandchildren: William (Kristen) Heikes, of Vicksburg; Cassandra (Wyatt) Taylor, of Decatur; Justin (Hannah) McCauley, of Lake Orion; Brandon Hall, of Paw Paw; Caleb Hall, of Grand Rapids; Courtney McCauley, of Kalamazoo, Elizabeth Heikes, of Portage; Allison Singh, of Plainwell; Michael McCauley, of Paw Paw; and Miah White; two great grandchildren: Carter and Redden. He is also survived by his siblings Janet (Robert) South, of OH; Helen (Louie) Coleman, of Kalamazoo; Brian (Mary) Heikes, of RI; two sisters-in-law: Dorla (Hurlon) Nowakowski, of Scotts; and Mary (Tom) Lawrence, of Battle Creek; brother-in-law: Mike (Sharon) Lux, of TN; and many nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his wife Sue, son Timothy “T.J” and great grandson, Mason.
Ken’s family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 to 7pm at the McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, Rupert-Durham Chapel, 409 South Main, Vicksburg, MI 49097 (269-649-1697). A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 11am at the Mint Cemetery.
A Celebration of Ken's life will be held at the annual family pig roast on October 24, 2020 at 5pm at the Heikes Family Farm.
