LaVerne David Brown

LaVerne David Brown, 88, passed away peacefully March 2, 2022 near his home in The Villages, Florida. Known as Verne, Dad or Grandpa to his loved ones, he will be deeply missed. He was a quiet man always ready with a quick smile or a tight hug.

Verne was born on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1933 to Reon & Velma Brown and raised in Plainwell, Michigan. He loved sports, playing football, basketball and running track throughout high school, even winning a state medal for the 440 relay. He went on to Michigan State University on a ROTC scholarship and remained a Spartan fan throughout his life. He graduated MSU as a mechanical engineer leading to his 30 year career at General Motors. He loved cars and tinkering with most anything. After college, he served in the Army & Army Reserves rising to the rank of Captain. Verne raised his family in Rochester, Michigan.

When we think of him, we often thought, “he who dies with the most toys wins”. He loved his toys. We always had a boat spending two weeks every summer water-skiing at Higgin’s Lake and snowmobiles spending many weekends in Cadillac, Michigan. We will hold these memories close as we mourn his loss.

He is survived by his companion of 40 years, Carol Hood, his children, Dave (Julie), Jeff and Jude (Sal). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Derek (Brandy), Torre (Kelsey), Nick and Kyle (Caitlyn) his great-grandchildren, Cole, Ray & Kate as well as his sister, Bea (Wayne) and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at the Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home in Plainwell, Michigan on March 22, 2022 at 10am immediately followed by his memorial at 11am. On March 23, his final resting place will be at Hillside Cemetery with his family.
