Lois J. Martens
Of Fulton and Gun Lake
Died January 27, 2010. Born August 22, 1936 near Portland, Michigan, to Donald and Marion Jones Gregory. She attended Gibbs and Coon schools in rural Ionia County, and was graduated from the latter in 1950. She was an alumna of Ionia High School ('54), Northwestern University (BA, '60), Schoolcraft College (RN/AAS, '75) and the University of Michigan (MS, '80). Lois practiced as a registered nurse at Grace Northwest Hospital in Detroit; VA Medical Center and Lakeview General Osteopathic Hospital in Battle Creek; Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall; Sturgis Hospital and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was a long time member of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and had attained CNOR designation. She attained the rank of major as a reservist for the Army. Lois enjoyed softball, bowling and gardening. She was a voracious reader and attended Great Books for many years. Lois volunteered with Girl Scouts for ten years. Lois enjoyed volunteering at the First Presbyterian Church Health Clinic in Kalamazoo. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Richland. On August 31, 1957 Lois was united in marriage to Ronald Martens, who survives. They lived in Chicago and Springfield, Ill.; Milwaukee, Wisc.; Livonia, Fulton and Shelbyille, Mich. Also surviving are three children: Alan (Cheryl) Martens of Holland, Camille (Martin) Subject of Leslie and Nathan Martens of Climax; seven grandchildren: Jasen (Christine) Rademacher, Sarah and Matthew Subject, Emma, Samuel, Elizabeth and Nicholas Martens; her siblings: Russell Gregory, Larry (Carol) Gregory, Carol Jean (Steve) Price, Jerry (Judy) Gregory, Norma (Bob) Mulder, Perry (Margaret) Gregory and Richard (Marilyn) Gregory; a cousin, Robert (Diana) Jones and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Richland on May 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. Parking lot can be accessed via Richland Eye Care. Additional parking is available around the Village Green.
