Margaret Irene Chapin, of Schoolcraft passed away December 24, 2021 at her home peacefully surrounded by family. Margaret (Margie) was born March 26, 1934 to Frank and Maude (Heath) Fuller in Avoca, Michigan in a farm home that was previously owned by her grandparents. She eventually resided with her family in Schoolcraft, Michigan where she graduated from Schoolcraft High School in 1952. At the age of 20 she married Irvin N Chapin in 1954. She was employed for a portion of her life as a journalist/writer for the Vicksburg Commercial and the Schoolcraft Express and raised 5 children who survive her. Debra Hilsbos, Lori Michael, Scott Chapin, Dana Wiley, and Pam Krieg. She also is survived by 25 grandchildren, multiple great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her six siblings: Francis Fuller, Gerald Fuller, Ralph Fuller, Harvey Fuller, Shirley Smithe, and Calvin Fuller.
With a strong interest and writing she attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College with an emphasis in History, Writing and Literature. Along with this interest she did extensive research in genealogy researching both her family and her husband's genealogy with contacts that led her into Canada, and across the United States. With the strong interest in history and the community she was also a member of the Schoolcraft Ladies Library Association and was active in their Holiday Homes tour as well as fund raisers for the group.
Margie was a member of the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church, attending on a regular basis as well as teaching Sunday School, Summer Bible School and assisting in Adult Sunday classes. Through the Methodist Church she became involved with the Lakeland Reform Church and their South County Clothing Shop which offered gently used clothing throughout the South County area. She managed the shop for almost 20 years and extended the services to the Veterans Hospital in Grand Rapids and other shops in Kalamazoo. Through her children she also worked as a leader in 4H teaching sewing.
Her interests were flower gardening, antiques, canning and freezing, quilting, ceramics and basket weaving. With her husband Irvin they traveled all over the United States camping and seeing historic sites across many of the states. Her most memorable trip was a visit to Nova Scotia to see where her Acadian roots originated.
Private memorial services will be held at Avink, McCowen and Secord Funeral Home in Vicksburg, Michigan for immediate family at this time and a memorial service for the public will be held at a later date. Donations and memorials can be sent to the Schoolcraft United Methodist Church, at 342 N. Grand St. Schoolcraft, Michigan 49087.
