Margaret Erma Schermerhorn was born in Allegan on January 9, 1921 to Henry Leslie and Mona Vivian Rubert and passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Heritage Upjohn Memory Care Center in Kalamazoo, MI. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and married Marcus Lee Schermerhorn in December of 1941. She soon became a military wife traveling all over Europe and the United States. After Mark passed in 1959 she settled in Schoolcraft to raise their four children; Bob, Dick, Sally and Pam. Margaret worked at Peter Eckrich and Sons for a few years, then took shorthand courses to procure a secretarial job with a legal firm in Kalamazoo for the remainder of her working career. Marge had many hobbies, gardening, sewing, bowling, crossword puzzles and loved reading for pleasure. She was always on a quest for knowledge of everything, which she instilled in her children, even down to watching her favorite "Jeopardy" with them and fleeing to the encyclopedias. Margaret loved the outdoors and at one time even tried her hand at crocheting. Later in life her interest in genealogy took her searching and traveling to other states for information. Marge made many interesting friends and touched many lives. Margaret possessed a rare quality of caring for most everyone she came in contact with and they in turn loved to be around her. She could spin a yarn a mile long and you never quite knew if it was embellished or not, as she met so many interesting people and lived such a colorful life. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Lee, brother, Carl Virgil Rubert and sister, Dora Jean MacLeod and is survived by her sister, Verla Ivone Ramsdell and children, Robert & Sharon Schermerhorn of Olympia, Washington, Richard & Nancy Schermerhorn, Sally Schermerhorn, Pamela Anderson, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Margaret will be interred at Fort Custer beside her husband on Tuesday April 26th at 11:00AM.
