Margean Alice Worst Gladysz, 86, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, after a brief illness. She was born on February 28, 1928, in Kalamazoo, Michigan and grew up nearby in Galesburg, where she remained until 2004 when she moved to Friendship Village in Kalamazoo. Margean graduated with a BA from Western Michigan College at 1946 and received her Masters in Library Science from Western Michigan University in 1968. A librarian, she spent 12 years in Media Services at the Kalamazoo Public Schools and 30 plus years at the Kalamazoo Public Library. Among her many interests were her active involvement in the local Civil War Roundtable and service as the community representative to the Friendship Village Board of Directors. At the age of 80, she became a published author of the autobiographical book, A Spy on the Bus: Memoir of a Company Rat, about her unusual career in the late 1940's. As a KPL History Room librarian, Margean loved the news, politics and foibles of the Kalamazoo area.
Predeceased by her parents John and Dorothy (Weber) Worst, she is survived by her husband of 63 years, Edward Gladysz, her children, son Dr. John Andrew Gladysz and wife Dr. Janet Blümel of College Station, TX, and daughter Margean Victoria Gladysz of Tinton Falls, NJ, her brother Gordon Worst of Galesburg and a number of nieces and nephews.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. In appreciation for those who brought great pleasure to her life, memorial donations can be made to the tax-exempt Friendship Village Employee Appreciation Fund, 1400 N. Drake Rd., Kalamazoo, MI 49006.
