There is no doubt that Margie Clark lived a life richly blessed with many warm memories that touched the hearts of many. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, her family meant the world to her and there simply wasn't anything that she wouldn't do for each and every one of them. Active as well as independent throughout her life, she was known to mow her lawn well into her eighties! Margie will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
The Roaring Twenties was a period of jazz music, the automobile boom, as well as large-scale industrial growth which brought about significant changes during this era. John and Claire (Campbell) Pence welcomed home their newborn baby girl, Marjorie, on February 26, 1925. During a time in history that was filled with feelings of freedom and independence, Margie was born the second of four children. Her birth brought much joy and happiness into the family home.
Growing up in Detroit, her father worked for Chysler and her mother was a homemaker. They moved to Durand to start their own farm when Margie was a teen. Many of her afternoons home from school, she tended to her farm chores and pitched in around the house. Graduating from Durand High School she enrolled at the business college in Lansing where she met her lifelong best friend, Velma. Cruising around town with a couple of girlfriends one evening, she caught the eye of Bob Clark. Little did she know at the time, that evening would change the course of her life forever. He was out with two of his buddies as well and was determined to ask her out on a date. In hot pursuit, he finally caught up to their car and she agreed to a boat ride down the Red Cedar. Smitten from the start, the rest was history! Eager to spend the rest of their lives together, they joined in marriage and shared a beautiful life raising their three wonderful daughters; Diane, Janet, and Rebecca.
She loved to venture out with the family camping each summer. Margie instilled in her daughters many valuable life lessons. Wanting nothing but the best for them, she was there for them through their many successes over the years. She modeled a lifetime of being caring and working hard. For a time, she was the secretary for the Michigan Auto Dealers. As much as she enjoyed keeping herself busy and earning spending money, her family and close friends were her greatest treasure. Blessed to be a grandmother, Margie adored each and every one of them. At each of their births, she savored holding them as well as rocking them to sleep. She loved being around babies. She was grateful to have lived a life so full to have also welcomed the birth of her four great-grandchildren. Each and every time they came to visit, her whole face lit up the rest of the day!
When she and Bob retired, they enjoyed sharing many special pastimes together. They built a beautiful home in Portage by 1990 and loved traveling to Florida over the years. She also enjoyed line dancing and reading. When Bob passed away, she was thoroughly heartbroken. He was her knight in shining armor and her heart never quite healed from the loss. She missed their companionship yet poured herself into her widow support group. She even wrote the newsletter for the group for a few years. She never really felt her age and wanted more time to explore the world. Yet, when the time came, Margie went with peace and grace. Loved beyond measure, her loving presence will be sincerely missed by her many special friends and family.
