Mary Jane Newman

Mary J. Newman, long-time Lake Station, IN resident, died May 5, 2020. Born to Alice and Peter Debus in Galien, MI on October 17, 1934, Mary’s life was filled with love, laughter and adventure. The oldest of six children, Mary’s family moved from Michigan to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1946, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953. Mary met her husband, Jerry Newman (d. 2016) while he was visiting Lincoln with friends. After their first meeting, Jerry would travel from Indiana to Nebraska every weekend to see Mary. Several months later, he proposed, and their new life began. After their marriage in 1955, Mary and Jerry moved to Ulm, Germany while Jerry was in the Army. They took advantage of their location and traveled extensively while they were living there. After returning from Germany, they settled in northwest Indiana and raised three children, Jeffrey Newman, David Newman (d. 2011) and Renee Newman-Theil, all of Michigan. Mary doted on her grandchildren Jared Newman and Sam Newman and always had lots of sweets available when they came to visit. Mary enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends, working in her flower gardens and was a talented seamstress and crafter. Mary will be remembered for being the perfect hostess, a loving mother and grandmother, and for her ability to find beauty in everyday settings. Mary will be interred at Fort Custer National Cemetery following a private service.
