Mary Stenstrom

Mary Jean Stenstrom passed away on May 6, 2024, at the age of 96. She was born on November 20, 1927, to the late Burton and Hattie (Murvine) Snow.

Mary was a 1945 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School. After high school, she started working at Michigan Bell as a switchboard operator, which prepared her for her future career at Upjohn; first as a switchboard operator, and finally as the Telecommunications Supervisor before her retirement in March 1990.

On April 12, 1947, Mary was united in marriage to Vernon Leroy Stenstrom. They purchased a home on Austin Lake and were soon joined by their children, Gerald and Bonita (Bunny). Mary and Vern were members of the Vicksburg United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. In her later years, Mary enjoyed golfing, volunteering at the church, and many handicrafts, especially knitting.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Vernon, who passed away in 1967; her parents Burton and Hattie Snow, and five of her siblings - Milford Snow, Neil Snow, Francis Leatherberry, Louise Jones, and Katherine Neeser.

Left to cherish her loving memory are her son Jerry (Jayne) Stenstrom, daughter Bunny (Howard) Scott; brother James Snow; grandchildren Doug Scott, Abigail Bontrager, and Joanna McKinney; four great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

In accordance with the family's wishes, public services will be held at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home at 409 South Main Street, Vicksburg, MI 49097 with visitation on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 12:00-1:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at the same location on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 1:00 pm with Gerald Stenstrom officiating. Following the service, Mary will be laid to rest at Vicksburg Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made to the Vicksburg United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
