Matthew Fevig

Matthew M. Fevig was born on Thanksgiving morning November 27, 1975, during a massive snowstorm in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Michael and Gail Fevig. He passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022, at the age of forty-six in Portage, MI. Matt was greeted into his glorious new home in heaven by his late sister: Melissa and his grandparents: Glen and Addie Fevig and Ken and Dorothy Meissner.

When he was younger Matthew enjoyed playing soccer on 8th Street and playing T-ball at the high school in Plainwell, MI. Unfortunately, at age eleven while playing with friends at the Island in Gull Lake, he was struck by lightning. Severe injuries cost him the ability to move himself and speak, forcing him to need a breathing tube and to communicate with eye movements. Through all this pain the community came together and rallied to support the Fevig family. Members of the church, school, family, and friends built him a barrier-free bedroom and bathroom onto his family’s home, because of their generosity Matt was able to stay with his family until the age of twenty-five.

At the age of twenty-five Matt was moved to a specialized group home, to meet all his care needs, called Schuring that was operated by Residential Opportunities Incorporated (ROI). Matt endured many years of health problems caused by the accident, but through it all he remained strong. His life was enriched with the care he received from the ROI nursing and staff, and he was able to enjoy many groups and relationships because of their care.

Memorials made in Matt’s memory may be directed to the Residential Opportunities Incorporated (ROI), 1100 South Rose Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49001.

We are thankful to have had Matt in our lives. He was named Matthew because it means “gift from God” and he truly was. It was hard to lose who he was when he was eleven years old, hard to lose him again when he had to move out at twenty-five, and now it is hard to lose him again at forty-six. We will miss him every day until we are reunited with our whole family again in heaven.

In accordance with the family’s wishes cremation has taken place and Matt will be laid to rest next to his sister at West Cooper Cemetery. A private service will be held among family members in the near future.
