On Sunday, December 8, 2024, God called Maxine Mary (Kohlhoff) June to His heavenly flower garden. Born March 28, 1931, the fourth child of Frank and Anna (Radseck) Kohlhoff. She was schooled for eight years at Westgate Country School, in South Haven Township. Then graduated from South Haven High School in 1948. Her bachelor’s degree came from Western Michigan University (WMU) in 1952.
She had met Gerald A. June in November of 1950, and they married on July 4, 1952. Soon after he joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War. In 1956, Jerry began building their house with the help of his father and younger brother on land given to the couple by his parents, as a welcomed wedding gift. Maxine left her position at Waldo Library, on the campus of WMU in 1962 to set up her home-based wedding and garden business and had three greenhouses. She and Jerry raised many garden flowers, like lilies and dahlias, used them while being the Floral Ministers at their church, St. Michael Lutheran, during growing season May through November. When Gerald died in 2007, after 55 years of marriage, Maxine continued with help of friends to maintain the mission, and made over 60 years of plants, bouquets and corsages. Her favorite season was spring.
She is survived by her brother-in-law: Jim (Pam) June, of OH; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Maxine wished to be cremated. A memorial service will be held at St. Michael Lutheran Church on Friday, December 20th at 11am. Maxine’s favorite color was yellow, and she wishes everyone to wear that color to the service and bring a flower from your garden or roadside or flower shop to put in vases provided at the church. These will be used at the luncheon following the service.
The family will greet friends at the church of Friday, December 20th from 10am until the time of the service. Burial of her ashes will be at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park.
