Michael Earl Cox of Dowagiac, MI, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024, at the age of 74. He was born on December 21, 1949, in Dowagiac, the third of four children to Richard and Betty (Hunsberger) Cox.
Michael graduated from Cassopolis High in 1969 and answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict, leaving home in the summer of '69. He dedicated one year of his life to the service, demonstrating unwavering commitment and courage, and was discharged with honors.
Upon returning home, Michael resumed his life's work on the family farm, Broad Lawn Farm, where he cultivated crops, tended to cattle, and raised pigs alongside his father. His love for farming was evident from a young age, and he took pride in being a skilled family farmer. The family farm, which he played a crucial role in, continues to thrive today.
Michael had a special fondness for spending time with his nieces and nephews, imparting the values of hard work and the joys of rural life. Known for staying within the rules but with a penchant for stretching them, his word and a handshake were sacred to him.
An avid baseball enthusiast, Michael was a switch hitter who enjoyed the sport thoroughly. His sibling rivalry with his sister Mary was a source of laughter, as they were born just 10 months apart. Mary playfully insisted they were the same age and during one of the last conversations they had she admitted that he was indeed older.
Michael is survived by his siblings, Janet (Brad) Barnett and Mary Cox-Nelson, along with 11 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in passing by his parents, Richard and Betty Cox, and his brother, Tom Cox.
A man of honor, dedication, and genuine warmth, Michael Earl Cox leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love for family, and a deep connection to the land he cherished. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In accordance with the family’s wishes a public funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the Wakelee Bible Church, 15921 Dutch Settlement Rd, Vandalia, MI 49095.
