Helt, Michael John
Of Schoolcraft
Mike was born April 6, 1952 and raised by his adoptive parents John and Bernice (Smith) Helt. He spent most of his childhood in Vicksburg, MI where he was fortunate enough to meet "Ma" and "Pa" Sabin and be guided by their love and commitment to one another. Mike married Carol Ruszkowski on December 26, 1970. He devoted every day loving and providing for her and their family. Mike was infinitely proud and supportive of his and Carol's children, whom he felt were the best children on Earth: Michelle (deceased), Matt Helt, 33, of Portage, and Emily (Jason) Taylor, 28 (31), of Kalamazoo. Mike cherished ALL of his nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and family. Recently, Mike's daughter Emily gave birth to Jacob, 2, and Brady, 7 months. Mike showered his grandsons with love, and glowed whenever they were around or whenever anyone would ask about them. Mike was an exceptional artist, who owned and operated Signs & More in Schoolcraft for 25 years. He relished in working side by side with his wife and son on a daily basis. He was involved in drag racing, RC car racing, classic car restoration, fishing, motorcycles, and many other hobbies where he met countless friends that he held very close all these years. He was loving, patient, kind, and giving beyond words. He was the type of guy that could make you feel better just by being in the same room. As his grandson Jacob would say, "E-Pa fix it." Mike was diagnosed with cancer in late September 2009. He passed away November 6, 2009, at home with his family. In honor of Mike's wishes he will be cremated and laid to rest beside his mother and daughter at Mint Rd. Cemetery in Vicksburg, MI. A small family grave site memorial will take place on a later date. His family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support.
