Nancy Jean Decker

February 23, 1936 — January 13, 2025

Vicksburg, MI

Nancy Jean Decker, lovingly known for her selflessness and dedication, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, in Portage, Michigan. Born on February 23, 1936, at home in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Nancy was the daughter of Ralph and Anna (Mulhaupt) Brown, Sr. She embodied kindness and warmth throughout her life.

Nancy attended Vicksburg High School and graduated with the Class of 1954. Her educational background laid the foundation for a career dedicated to service and community involvement.

A proud member of the Vicksburg community, Nancy's contributions were far-reaching. For over 30 years, she selflessly volunteered for the South County Ambulance, where her caring spirit extended to all those who needed assistance. She also played a vital role in supporting her husband, Otto Decker, with the accounting for his business, Decker Auto Service. In addition to her volunteer work, she served with dedication in the office of the Secretary of State when they operated a branch in Vicksburg.

Nancy found fulfillment as a secretary for the Vicksburg Community Schools, where she was not only an administrative support specialist but also used her EMT background to help comfort and care for students as needed following their recesses at Sunset Elementary. She also worked at the Administration Building, Middle School, and High School. She contributed her skills briefly to the Portage Public Schools.

A member of the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church for over 60 years, Nancy drew strength and guidance from her faith, which was a cornerstone of her identity. She was immensely proud of her family, finding joy in every moment spent with them. Nancy will be remembered for her vibrant hobbies, including sewing, knitting, quilting, and crocheting, which allowed her to express her creativity and affection through handmade gifts for her loved ones.

Among her proudest accomplishments was her enduring marriage to Otto Decker, whom she wed on April 16, 1955. Their love story began with a blind date arranged by a mutual friend, and from that moment on, they forged a beautiful life together, filled with shared experiences and deep affection.

As we remember Nancy, we honor a life that was characterized by a genuine love for family, friends, and community. Her caring nature and unwavering support for those around her will leave a legacy in the hearts of all who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her six of her children: Anna (Scott) Cowherd, Tony (Monica Johnson) Decker, Mike (Kathy) Decker, Melanie (Andy) Boyd, Joe (Karen) Decker, and Phil (Emily) Decker; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, with two on the way.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Otto; son: Paul Christopher Decker; parents: Anna and Ralph Brown, Sr.; sister: Helen Brown Horn; two brothers: Ralph Brown Jr. and John Brown; in-laws: Otto Decker Sr, Frank and Marie Weitenauer; sister-in-laws: Joan Wales-Dixon and Delores Elkins.
