Nona's life began August 11, 1911 on a farm located on Silver Street, south of Vicksburg, the daughter of Soloman and Ada Bastian. she attended strong school until the age of 10 when the family moved into town and she finished her schooling at Vicksburg High school. Nona began her working life at Elam's stationary in the cafeteria. During this time, she was invited out on a blind date with Vernon Mattheis. Shortly after she and Vern began spending more time together and they eloped to LaGrange, Indiana. On June 29, 1932. A few years later Nona and Vern began their family and she changed her career to become a full-time homemaker and mother. She was a member of the Vicksburg United Methodist church and United Methodist women.
Beyond Nona's church involvement, her heart was in the Vicksburg Community Center. She has volunteered for over 21 years with senior services, delivering Meals on wheels, and doing whatever she could to help. She enjoys line dancing at the center and loves to walk. She was frequently seen walking up and down Prairie street in Vicksburg. Nona loved to go on Sunday rides and traveled to Wisconsin when her son was serving his country in the Armed Forces. She was also a member of the Eagles Lodge and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge serving as the Noble Grand.
Nona passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the age of 109 years old. Nona's family includes her daughter Phyllis and her husband Jim Barrett of Schoolcraft; LaVerne Mattheis of TX; Lewis Mattheis of Vicksburg; and Margaret and her husband Clifford Miller of Vicksburg. Nona was a grandma to nine, 18 great grandma and several great great grandchildren. She also has many nieces and nephews. She follows in death by three brothers, Jennings, Deloss and Dwaine and three sisters Blanche, Edith and Eliza.
Nona's family will meet friends from 11am to 1pm at the McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, Rupert -Durham Chapel, 409 South Main, Vicksburg, MI 49097 (269) 649-1697. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at 1pm with Pastor Buff Coe officiating. Burial will follow at Vicksburg Cemetery.
In accordance to the State of Michigan current Health Department COVID recommendations, all in attendance are requested to wear a mask and maintain social distance.
