Copenhaver, Rex E, age 73, passed away with both of his daughters by his side at Bronson hospital in Kalamazoo, MI after an unfortunate series of events early Saturday morning October 5, 2019 thus ending his 13 year battle with cancer and 2 exhausting years of dialysis.
Rex was born in Dowagiac on November 30, 1945, the son of Rex and Paula (Johnson) Copenhaver.
He graduated from Marcellus High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served overseas as an Air Traffic Controller. He continued to work as an Air Traffic controller and flight instructor upon his return. Rex was passionate about hunting, flying, and politics. As an active member of the NRA, he was more than a strong advocate for the 2nd Amendment and passionate about expressing his opinions on firearms to anyone who would lend an ear.
He is survived by his two daughters, Michelle and Heidi Copenhaver; grandson Ross Burson; brother Michael (Chris ) Copenhaver; nephew Jason (Lauren) Copenhaver and niece Caryn (Damon) Blackburn; and best friend Ike.
The family will be having a private memorial service at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to West Michigan Cancer Center. Online condolences may be left at
