Born Richard Raymond Buck on May 27, 1935, the second of three children to Paul and Gladys Buck in Lansing, Michigan. He graduated from Lansing Sexton HS and went on to a stint in the US Naval Reserves, and returned to marry his high school sweetheart and mother of his three children .
He then moved to Kalamazoo and tried several professions, including being a Kirby Salesman, before landing a job at Sequoia Press in downtown Kalamazoo. He started out as a typesetter and worked his way up the ladder to operating and being the general manager for the next 25 years, with a total of over 40 years in the printing industry.
He was an avid sports fan, who enjoyed both playing and watching baseball, bowling, golf, basketball, hockey, you name it, he liked it. He even had a run playing semi pro ball until he left his left ankle at second base. He spent the last several years involved in the Seniors Bowling Leagues, and also playing golf when he got the chance.
His other passion was steam trains of all sorts which took him across the country going on excursions, from just an hour or two, to day long trips. This was also a family thing that he did.
He was also involved in both Lane Boulevard United Methodist Church and Sunnyside United Methodist Church for many years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Dagny A. Hall Buck in early 1971. He also lost his second of three children, Jody Lynn Buck in 1979 at 21. Also preceding him was his brother Roger and his wife Betty Buck just recently. A niece, who was born on his 12th birthday, Linda Van Dyke also preceded him.
He met his current wife Janet Kay Tackaberry Buck at Sequoia Press in late 1971, and they married in October of 1972. They shared almost 41 years together, and will be sorely missed.
Richard is survived by his wife Janet K. Buck, his older sister Barbara and her husband Bill Gee in Iowa, his sister in law Berneice Hunt eldest daughter Pamela Jo Buck Wolthuis, his youngest child, Bradley R. Buck and his wife Emily J., grandchildren Howard McNees and his wife Kelley, Sonny McNees and his wife Maria, Kristina, Alexandra, Alexis, Madeline, and Bradon Buck. He also has several great grandchildren Jasmine, Haileigh, Jeremy, Nick, Karley, Brandon, Tristan and Connor. He has several nephews, Roger Paul and wife Yvonne, Ronald, Dennis Buck, and Linda's husband Steve Van Dyke and nieces Cathy Nessan and husband Craig, Debbi Soto and her husband Miguel and great nieces and nephews Joe, Brandi, Emily, Andre, Eric and Kayley, Ben, Nate, Sarah, Andrew, Jessica, Mary Catherine, Kelly, Karyn and her husband James Dean and Micheal and his wife Katie. Also he has several great, great nieces and nephews including Steven, Samantha, Sarah, Emma, Daniel, Tori, James Jr., Chloe, Megan, Kaitlin and Mason.
A Celebration Of Life will take place on October 13, 2013 at St. Michaels Lutheran Church 7211 Oakland Drive Portage, MI 49007 with a service at 2 PM with a luncheon to follow until 5 PM. The Pastors Jason Toman and Daniel Hoogerheide will be co-presiding.
