Richard (Dick) J. Loney, 81 passed away on Saturday, March 28th at Bronson Hospital with his family at his side. He was born August 11th, 1933 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Lawrence and Anna (Schmidt) Loney. Dick grew up in Kalamazoo and graduated from Saint Augusta High School. In January of 1955, he joined the Army where he served in Germany and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant before receiving an Honorable Discharge. Dick attended Western Michigan University where he received a degree in education. He then attended Michigan State University and received a masters in education leadership. Richard began work in Owosso, Michigan at St. Paul High School where he was a teacher and football coach. In 1965, he moved his family to Portage, Michigan and started working for the Portage Public Schools where he was a teacher, coach and administrator for 29 years before retiring in 1994. Dick was preceded in death by his father Lawrence, mother Anna, sister Anna and brother Larry. Richard is survived by his 6 sons, 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his sister Mary Brown and sister-in-law Elsie Loney. A graveside service will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kalamazoo on Saturday, April 11th at 11:00am. The family will be greeting friends and relatives after the service at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1150 W Center Ave at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made to Portage Community Outreach Center.
