Richard H. "Dick" Porter Jr.
Age 76
Dick passed away Thursday June 16, 2016 with his family at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Roddy, Dennis, and Kenny Porter.
Dick was born in South Haven, Michigan in 1940 to Richard Porter Sr. and Emily (Sherburne) Smith. His family moved to Austin Lake near Vicksburg, Michigan where he attended Vicksburg Schools. He graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1960 and during his years there he excelled in cross country.
After graduation he worked for Cool Farm Dairy as a tanker driver. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1964, where he served 4 years, achieving the rank of machinist mate second class. While in the Navy Dick married his sweetheart Carolyn on June 12, 1965. After serving his country he went to work at Upjohn Co., retiring after 28 years in the pharmaceutical industry.
Dick enjoyed a very full life centered on his family. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, camping, hunting and farming. Dick also enjoyed many "toys" throughout his life. He owned many fast cars, snowmobiles and motorcycles. As he aged he finally slowed down and bought a tractor he and his family together drove in the antique tractor pulls at the local fairs.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 51 amazing years, Carolyn (Ross) Porter, daughter Johnnine (David) Concannon, son Ross (Gayle) Porter and grandchildren Alexandra Concannon, Jamie-Lee (Andy) York, Jasmine Kline, Nate and Zack Porter, 4 greatgrandchildren, 2 sisters Carol Wilkening, Kathleen (Nils) Reichert, and 1 brother Harold Porter.
Dick was a remarkable man who was known and loved by many.
In accordance with Dick's wishes, cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Please join the family in a celebration of his life on Wednesday June 22, 2016 at 1:00pm at the Simple Truth Church, 94777 M40, Marcellus, MI
