Robert J. Malhiot, 91, of North Riverside, formerly of Manistee, Michigan, died Thursday from complications of pneumonia. He was born in Chicago Nov. 21, 1926 and lived in Oak Park for many years.
Malhiot was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He earned his doctorate degree in physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1957. He went on to a distinguished career as a professor at IIT and served as chairman of the Department of Physics for several years. He and Grete Malhiot, his wife of 56 years, retired to Manistee, Mich. in 1986.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grete, and his brother, Gene. He is survived by his 3 children David (Kathy Sanderlin), Philip (Victoria Pierce) and Karen (Brian Peterson); 6 grandsons and 4 great-grandchildren.
