Robert Wirbel, 87
Robert Stanley Wirbel of Holland passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2014 in Holland, MI. He was born on April 9, 1927 in Hamilton, Ohio to Stanley and Lucille Wirbel. On October 22, 1955 he was united in marriage to Arloa Wirbel, his wife of 59 years, who survives. Also surviving are their two children, Gregory Wirbel of Kalamazoo, and Gina (Paul) Shreve of Grand Rapids; two grandchildren, Stephanie Shreve and David Shreve; four sister-in-laws, Louise Wirbel of Tennessee, Cylinda Dalman of Holland, Pearl Scott of Grand Rapids, and Susan Raak of Holland.
Robert graduated from Central High School in Grand Rapids in 1945. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Following his discharge from the Navy he earned his bachelor's degree in Police Administration from Michigan State University. He worked in Facilities Administration at Michigan State University and Western Michigan University for 30 years, retiring in 1987.
Robert was a life-long Presbyterian, most recently as an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Holland. Bob was a long time member of the Kalamazoo Lions Club and served on the Board of the Kalamazoo Child Guidance Center.
Bob enjoyed boating, water skiing and many other activities with family and friends. All who had the pleasure of meeting Bob experienced his warm smile, light heartedness, and broad sense of humor. Bob maintained optimism throughout a long period of infirmity.
The Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Holland at 11:00 am on Saturday, Nov. 8. The family will receive visitors at 10 am.
