Rodger Lee Hughey, of Vicksburg passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024 at the age of 85. Rodger was born on September 15, 1938 in Kalamazoo, MI. He was the son of Max and Violet (Huntington) Hughey. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, love and was a man of faith.
Rodger's life was one filled with many achievements and cherished memories. He was raised on a small cattle farm near Mendon with his older sister Nancy where he learned a good work ethic and the value of family and small town community. The hay loft in the barn served two purposes. One was for storing hay and the other was for shooting hoops. Rodger spent endless hours perfecting his shot. He excelled in basketball, baseball & football earning 12 varsity letters. Rodger was an all-state football quarterback who led his team to an undefeated season. Later in life Rodger was inducted into the Mendon High School Hall of Fame for his community involvement and athletic achievements.
Rodger fell in love with Barbara Kaiser early in high school. They were married on September 7, 1958 marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership that lasted until Barbara's passing in 2012. Together they raised three children - Rick, Randy, and Kathy - infusing their home with love and warmth. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren.
Rodger attended Western Michigan University for 3 years in the industrial arts program. At the same time, he served as an apprentice for a local builder before venturing out in 1963 to establish his own company, Rodger L. Hughey Builders. In 1966 they purchased 60 acres of land in Vicksburg to develop. That lead to their decision to relocate from Mendon to Vicksburg where they built their first home. His son Rick joined Hughey Builders in 1977. Rodger got his real estate broker’s license in 1980 and established Hughey Realtors in 1983 with his son Randy. Daughter Kathy joined the real estate business in 1996. Rodger developed two subdivisions and built over 300 homes in the area. He became known for his quality workmanship.
Along with his career he believed in building community. In 1973 he started a senior little league program and was division president for 4 years. Rodger was instrumental in helping to build the senior baseball field.
His presence at Vicksburg athletic events was a familiar sight, where he supported local teams alongside his close friends. He also sponsored numerous youth athletic programs.
Life didn’t go without its struggles for Rodger. He was twice diagnosed with cancer and overcame those challenges to become a cancer survivor.
His love for travel took him and Barbara to various destinations across the country, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime. Rodger and Barbara enjoyed life’s journey and are together again.
Described as someone who could bring out the best in others, Rodger was known for his fortitude, outgoing nature, and ability to create meaningful connections wherever he went. Above all else, he was characterized by his immense kindness and unwavering dedication to his family. Rodger and Barbara were blessed to have the help of their family, friends & the Vicksburg Community!
Rodger found solace and strength in his faith, regularly attending services at Vicksburg United Methodist Church up until the day before his passing.
In the hearts of those who knew him best, Rodger Lee Hughey will forever be remembered for his unwavering spirit, generous heart, and profound impact on all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. May his memory live on as a testament to a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure through generations to come. God is Good!
Rodger is survived by his three children: Rick (Ann) Hughey, of Scotts; Randy (Janine) Hughey, of Vicksburg; Kathy (Steve) Peterson, of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren: Ryan Hughey; Allen (Dannette) Hughey, of Scotts; Erica (Zak) Vanderpool, of Plainwell; David Hughey, of Portage; Nicholas (Jordin) Peterson, of Scotts; Kati (Matthew) Roberts, of Saline; and Jared (fiancée, Dori Mulder) Peterson, of Schoolcraft; seven great grandchildren: Delilah, Daisy, Emmett, Aletheia, Nathaneal, Peter and Lucy. He is also survived by his stepbrother: Marvin (Gloria) Sanderson, of Mendon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; sister and brother-in-law: Nancy and Ron Blanchard; stepbrother: Fred Sanderson; father: Max Hughey, mother: Violet Hughey, and stepmother: June Hughey.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 4pm to 7pm at the funeral home, and then again on Saturday from 10am until the time of the service at the church.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 20th, 2024 at 11am at the Vicksburg United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Vicksburg Cemetery.
