Sonia Gail Hicks 81 passed away peacefully on April 21, 2021 surrounded by her three daughters. She was battling cancer. Sonia was born April 25, 1939. She was the youngest daughter of Karl and Lenice Otte. She was born in Holton, Michigan. Her Family moved to Coloma, Michigan. She grew up in Coloma with her three sister's and two brothers. After graduating from school she wanted to be a nurse to help people. She attend Mercy hospital nursing program and talked about how she lived at the Eleanor house for girls during this time. Sonia later worked at Mercy hospital in Benton Harbor in the pediatric ward. Then she met the love of her life Donald Ray Hicks. They married January 15, 1966.They relocated to Kalamazoo, Michigan. They raised their three daughters and were married for 50 year's. Sonia was young at heart. If you met her she had a unforgettable personality. She liked being stylish with her many different style of ring's. She had a love for music her family remembers some of her favorites were Dolly Pardon, Elvis and 80's music. She also enjoyed watching game shows. Sonia loved going on outings with her family. This included shopping, spending time at the beach, going to restaurants and out for ice cream. She loved holidays and family dinners. Her family will miss talking to her on the phone and text messages telling us goodnight. Sonia loved cat's. Especially her cats Missy and Max. Sonia was preceded in death by her husband Donald Ray Hicks; her parents Karl and Lenice Otte; two sister's and a brother. She is survived by her three daughters: Dona Rocha (Jon Rocha), Amy Hicks (William Miller), Sheri Leatherman (Don Roe); her grandchildren Jonny Rocha, Jason Rocha, Vanessa Berry, Haley Rocha, Breanna Amaro, Brittany Leatherman and Brooke Leatherman; great grandchildren: Jon Jr., Arianna Rocha, Haley and Liam Rocha, Natalie and Jackson Amaro; Her sister Eleanor Wellborn and Billy Otte as well as many Nieces and Nephews. Due to Covid a memorial service is being planned for a later date. Memorial donations can be made to your local animal shelter in her name. "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadows of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me."
