Susan Corrine (Purdham) Catton, aged 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24th. Susan was born January 2, 1928 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Fountain and Ola (Wilson) Purdham. She lived all of her life in the Kalamazoo area, wintering for many years in Lakeland, Florida. She gradutated from Kalamazoo Central High School. Susan was united in marriage to Lyle Catton on May 7th, 1948. Together, they had two daughters, Claudia and Barbara.
Susan was a life long learner. She taught herself to sew when her daughters were young and became an accomplished seamstress. Susan loved all of the needle arts and liked to knit, crochet and do crewel work. She learned to quilt in the 1980's and became an avid quilter and was a member of the Log Cabin Quilters.
Susan loved working in her gardens and was a member of the garden club.
She renewed her interest in playing the piano in the mid '70's and continued to take piano lessons for many years .
Susan became a devoted hospice volunteer with Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan and truly loved her work with families, and later, at Rose Arbor. She continued her volunteer work with hospice for many years. She was a member of the Parchment United Methodist Church since 1960 and served the church in many capacities; she loved her church home dearly, and the many friends she had there.
Most importantly, Susan was a dear wife, mother and grandmother, greatly loved.
Susan was preceeded in death by two brothers, Richard and Jim, her beloved daughter, Barbara Haase in 1990, and her nephew, Scott Purdham in 1992.
She is survived by her loving husband, Lyle Catton, brother, Tom (MaryAnn) Purdham, daughter, Claudia (Steve) Zimmerman, granddaughter, Kristin Zimmerman, grandsons, Daniel (Kathleen) Haase and Andrew Haase. Also surviving are 4 great grandchildren, Christopher, Benjamin, Carley and Trevor. Susan is survived as well by 4 nieces, Sally Pickens, Jill Anderson, Susan Stewart and Kari Incremona.
There will be a memorial service for Susan on Tuesday, July 28th at 11:00 a.m. at the Parchment United Methodist Church, 225 Glendale Blvd., Parchment, Michigan, Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
