Susan Harper-Grieger, known affectionately as Susie, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024, in Kalamazoo, MI at the age of 79. She was born September 20,1944, in her hometown of Ann Arbor, MI. She was the daughter of James and Victoria (Gellatly) Harper. James passed away when Susan was rather young. Her mother remarried Arthur Spang, who embraced the role of a father to Susan.
Susan led a fulfilling life dedicated to education. She embarked on a teaching career, touching the lives of countless students with her passion and knowledge. Her impact as an educator will resonate through the generations of students she influenced.
Beyond her career, Susan was a spirited world traveler. One of her cherished memories was exploring Europe alongside her mother. From traversing the diverse landscapes of Mexico to visiting every state within the country, Susan had a deep appreciation for different cultures and people.
Educationally driven, Susan pursued her studies diligently. Growing up in Ann Arbor, she excelled in the local public school system before earning her bachelor’s in teaching from Western Michigan University. Her thirst for knowledge led her to attain two master’s degrees—one in Library Science and another in Geography.
Described as kind, giving, and self-sustaining by those who knew her best, Susan's warm personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life and held a deep respect for all living creatures.
In her leisure time, Susan dedicated herself to staying active through daily workouts, nurturing her garden, and reading. Her determination and endurance were further evidenced by completing the challenging Chicago Marathon—a testament to her unwavering spirit.
She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and knowledge that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Susan Harper-Grieger will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with this remarkable woman.
Susan is preceded in death by longtime companion, Jerry Yearling; and her parents: James Harper, and Victoria and Arthur Spang.
She is survived by her two daughters: Chrissy (Scott Thomas) Hamlin, of Three Rivers; and Jeny (Mike) Dentler, of IN; three grandchildren: Kiera (Mike Kruppenbach) Sandoval, of Portage; Brandon (Kenzie) Dentler, of IN and Delaney Dentler, of IN; and her great granddog whom she affectionately called: Penny Poo Poo. She is also survived by her sister: Mary “Harpo” Dake, of LA; one nephew: Eric Dake, of LA; and great-nephew: Huey Dake, of LA.
Susan has been cremated and the family will hold a Celebration of Life for family and close friends on Sunday, June 23, 2024 at the families home on Fisher Lake in Three Rivers, MI with a private burial service at a later date. Please contact the family for further details.
