Thelma S. Brundage
Holland, MI; formerly of Kalamazoo
Passed away peacefully on November 16, 2011 at The Inn of Freedom Village in Holland, Michigan. Thelma Mathilde Swanson was born in Kalamazoo, MI on March 19, 1916, the daughter of Carl William and Mathilde (Nysaeter) Swanson. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, and enrolled at Western State Teachers College (now WMU) in Kalamazoo where she received a B.S. degree in Education in 1938. She was briefly employed as a kindergarten teacher in Greenville, MI. On April 14, 1939 she married Joseph E. Brundage at The First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holland, an avid reader, gardener, and competitive bridge player, and enjoyed playing golf until late in her life. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Susan Ullrich of Ann Arbor and Nancy (Andrew) Miller of The Villages, FL; five grandchildren, Frederick J. (Carolyn) Ullrich, Kathryn (Jeffery) Hauk, Amy (Ian) Mitchell, M.D., Kari (William) Spallone, and Debra (Donald) Halterman; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mable Brundage of Kalamazoo. She was predeceased by her son-in-law John F. Ullrich, and her brother, Lt (jg) Carl O. Swanson, a navy pilot in the WW II conflict. Interment will be in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area, memo line: Freedom Village Resident Scholarship Fund, and sent to Freedom Village, 145 Columbia Avenue, Holland, MI 49423, attention Gwen Bartels.
Cremation has been handled by the Avink Funeral Home Cremation Society in Schoolcraft.
