Thomas A. Somers of Allegan, formerly of Plainwell, passed away after a short battle with cancer, on Monday, March 27, 2023 at the age of 78. Tom was born on October 27, 1944 in Poplar Bluff, MO. He was the son of Arthur and Priscilla (Handy) Somers. Later his family moved to Plainwell, MI where Tom grew up and graduated from Plainwell High School with the Class of 1962. Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves. On December 14, 2002 he married Deborah Bushee.
Tom had many jobs throughout his life, including being a DJ for WKMI, delivering beer for Imperial Beverage Co., owning a bar in Plainwell (Somers Place which is now 10th Street), working for Rapid River Rustic Log Homes and becoming a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines.
Tom also owned several horses and liked to enter them in harness races. . . a few of them even won!! Along with horses, Tom owned several boats and loved being on the Big Lake. He also went on a few sailing trips with his buddies. He owned property in the UP and loved going up there; he especially liked Mackinac Island.
Tom loved meeting and talking to people and made friends no matter where he was. He was known for his sense of humor and love for telling stories.
Tom had so many interests in life, it's hard to capture them all in just a few short paragraphs. He will be dearly missed by many!
Tom is survived by his wife of 20 years, Deb; two daughters: Jennifer (Mike) Bryson, of WI; Stephanie Somers-Gresh, of IL; his granddaughter who was very special to him: Luca Gresh; two siblings: Tim (Marcy) Somers, of Lawton; and Sue (Dan) Cropsey, of White Pigeon. He also leaves behind his stepchildren: Jen (Tyler) Nelsen, of Bloomingdale; Sarah (Todd) Wade, of Kalamazoo; Lisa (Dominic) Adams, of Allegan; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will all remember him with love..
A Celebration of Life open house will be held on Saturday, April 8th from 4pm to 7pm at the Otsego VFW Post 3030, 124 N. Farmer St., Otsego.
