Varetta M. Powers
Varetta M. Powers, age 84, of Marcellus, passed away unexpectedly Monday, December 29, 2014.
She was born April 22, 1930, the daughter of Earl and Jennie (Schmidt) Copenhaver, of Marcellus. She was a graduate of Marcellus High School and in 1947 was chosen as the Bluegill Frolic Queen.
Varetta and Robert Powers were married in 1949. After 65 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on November 21, 2014.
Varetta served an active role in our community for many years. She had been President of the Marcellus Community Schools Board, a Trustee on the Marcellus Village Council, Hudson Memorial Board Director, Marcellus Township Deputy Treasurer, and a member of the Marcellus Community Food Pantry Board.
She enjoyed taking care of her lawn, flowers and traveling with her granddaughter Shana and watching her participate in horse shows. Varetta lived a wonderful and very full life.
Surviving is one son, Phillip “Pepper” Powers of Mattawan; one daughter Tonya (Michael) Brown and granddaughter Shana Jo of Grand Blanc; and her beloved dog, Holly. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Betty and brother Rex.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 P.M. Friday, January 2, 2015 in the Mater-Ralston Funeral Home, Marcellus.
Memorial services will be held at 4:30 P.M. in the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Hudson Memorial Building or Varetta suggested a tree or flower planted in her memory.
